Well it happens on the outskirts of Versailles on the third Sunday of September each year. Located south of Versailles and north of Webster, off of State Route 185, on St. Peter’s Road The tiny congregation of the St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church closed their doors in 1905, over one hundred and five years ago. This German immigrant congregation founded in 1850 in the home of these hearty settlers in what was then referred to as “Dutch Roost” faded away into other English congregations and closed the doors on a bit of America’s early history.
The congregation was gone, yet an annual Homecoming Service was held each year after the closing for those original families to gather and remember. Today most are gone, yet a new generation gathers and you too are invited!
The church looks much like it did when it closed. From the handmade pulpit, to the original oil chandelier, to a fabulous old pump organ those German pioneers would surely recognize their old log church.
The church and cemetery are maintained by a Board of Trustees comprised of several of the original families who still reside in the area.
Please join us and turn the clock back on September 19th at the Annual Homecoming. The church and cemetery will be open for self guided tours at 1:30 with a Hymn Sing at 2:30. The Rev. Alan Knoke of St. John Lutheran in Greenville will be the leader. The youth of Trinity will offer an Old Fashioned Church Yard Lunch beginning at 1:30 p.m.
For the history buff, original histories of St. Peter’s have been re-printed and will be available for purchase at a nominal price.
Come for a peek into history, or a bite to eat, or help us sing those old hymns, but please come and help us keep this uniquely special tradition alive!

“We’ve got spirit, yes, we do. We’ve got spirit how about you?” This was just one of the old cheers that rocked the stands at Versailles football games thirty plus years ago. Then the band would break into “The Horse” or some other song to get the crowd fired up. Times have changed but for one night those old days can rock again. Kevin Taylor, Versailles High School’s current band director along with your Alumni Board urge you to dust off those old instruments, break out those batons and flags and let’s party like its 1999!
All band alums are invited to join our current band in the stands as we welcome the Graham Falcons to Tiger Town for the first home football game of the season on Friday September 3, 2010 and the kick off for the All Class Reunion 2010 edition.
You say you don’t remember the songs? That’s why a special rehearsal will be held in the new band room at Versailles High School on September 2, at 7:00p.m. You can enter through door number 10. If you need an instrument there are some at the school to borrow. So this is the invite and no excuses like you gave Mr. Cooper why your Government homework wasn’t done! The Darke County Coroner’s Office and the Darke County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the death of a twelve year old child identified as Jordan T. Pond of Versailles. On Friday evening, August 20, 2010 at approximately 10 PM the child suffered a sudden cardiac arrest at the Darke County Fair near the area of Gate 6. An EMS unit stationed on the grounds came to the aid of the child. The child was rushed to Wayne Hospital across the street from the fairgrounds where he was later pronounced dead.
Darke County Coroner Dr. T. Kathman reports that preliminary findings suggest that the cause of death is natural. A final determination on cause and manner of death is pending further forensic testing which could take several weeks.
There is no evidence at this time to suggest that the child’s death is associated with his attendance at the Darke County Fair.
Calling on all sings! To honor our nation, school and all those great music teachers that have taught us through the years. I would like to thank the Versailles Alumni Association for putting the softball tournament together. My wife Jackie and I spent the weekend camping out in left field with my brother and his girlfriend. We got to see a lot of friends and family that we had not seen in a long time. The best part was just being able to spend time with old classmates, eat some good food, drink some cold beer and run rule the 1990 team after they made their Grandma/Grandpa & Geritol jokes. We are definitely coming back again next year and would encourage anyone that can to do so. It was a blast. A lot of good PEOPLE...
As we drove through Versailles on our way home Jackie and I both noticed and commented on how much PRIDE everyone takes in keeping their place up.
We also got to see the PROGRESS on the new school.
It is good to see that Versailles, OH is living up to the motto “PEOPLE, PRIDE & PROGRESS”. After this past weekend they may want to add PARTY to the Motto.
Note to anyone over 30. Start stretching 2 weeks in advance. Especially the hamstring. A massage therapist could have made a fortune this weekend.
